Castlevania box art |
Ahh, Castlevania. When I hear about this game, I remember my friends and myself, stuck in front of a TV for hours, sharing the levels with each other so we could rest, as most of us already had Nintendo thumbs (aka: Nintenditis, a 90's video game disease that carved a circle on your right thumb, from the repetitive pressing of the buttons).
The hero's name is Simon Belmont and he is a vampire hunter. Your task is simple: Kill count Dracula. To do this you must wander into six levels. Belmont's main weapon is his whip, the "Vampire Killer", and various secondary weapons like boomerangs, vials etc.

The cartridge |
On the end of each level there is a boss, inspired from some night-crawling creature and mythology. You'll find a giant bat, Medusa, Mummies, Frankenstein, the Grim Reaper and of course, Dracula which is a two parter boss (you'll see).
The game is very atmospheric and was considered as "horror" back in the day. The music is dark and binds with the gameplay. Graphic-wise the game is very good, especially if you consider that it is a 1987 release.
Conclusion: Castlevania is a great game that will keep you on your screen until you finish it. There is an 8-bit dark world packed in this cartridge that you must not miss. If you haven't played it yet, then you probably should and fast. It is rated E (very common) on the NES rarity list and you can get it on eBay for about 50$ full with box and manual. Don't miss out this one.
