Review #14: Terminator 2 Judgement Day. Great movie, ok game

Terminator 2 box art. Arnie looks good!

One of my favorite movie series is the Terminator. I remember when I saw T2 back in 1991 I was amazed. I liked T1 better (favorite movie scene of all time: When the Terminator rises from the flames of the burning truck, showing the full metal skeleton, in Terminator 1) but T2 also offered a new perspective to the series.

Box back. Love the Harley
Now about the movie-based game. T2 for the NES is a pretty decent game. It is struggling to stay within the movie bountries but is quite entertaining. It consists of 5 levels, each one of them is a key scene from the movie.

Level 1 is where Arnold beats the hell out of the motorcycle dudes to get his clothes. Well, he is not naked in the beginning and I suppose that's Nintendo's fault due to their restraining game policies back then. Well, ok...

In level 2 you get to drive the Harley trying to get to John Connor before T-1000 does. It is a very tricky level and you must be really careful with the locked doors or ...boom, Arnie is dead! (1 ton of metal dies by a door hit, okkkkk...).

Get Sarah Connor from the crazy people home to get through level 3, but beware... John Connor's sissy order "I swear I won't kill anybody" takes effect here. So you have to shoot everybody (except T-1000) in the legs to comply. Damn!..

Level 4 is good-ol' Cyberdyne systems, the T-101's mommy. You have to collect bombs and deposit them to... I don't know what that is but I'll call it "bombing stations", in all floors to blow the whole building up in the air.

And last but not least the mill, where at last you face T-1000 for the final battle.

In the visual department, the game is quite nice. The backgrounds are well drawn, the characters are ok and it delivers a nice gaming experience. The music is a little repetitive, with techno beats and the sound effects almost not exist. The only thing you hear is punching and stomping.

Conclusion: This gamepak tries really hard to imitate the movie and it delivers at some level. As I mentioned before, the game is quite fun and it will entertain you for some time. The difficulty is above average and sometimes really annoying (especially in the Harley level, it takes some time to get used to the door-opening thing and until then it is quite frustrating because you die over and over again). Overall, T2 is a good game for the NES that won't let you down. It is rated B- (Borderline rare) on the NES rarity list and you can get it on eBay for about 25$ full with box and manual.
